The Ecologist Film Unit travelled to Calabria in Southern Italy in 2012 to reveal how the annual orange harvest makes use of African migrants paid poverty wages and living in squalid conditions. The investigation prompted a public outcry, leading to prime time coverage across Italy (and well beyond), street protests in Rosarno and crisis talks between the Italian government and soft drinks manufacturers. Producers & buyers of orange concentrates from the region pledged to examine ways to improve the conditions and pay for workers following our investigation.
